Top box - Backrest fallen away

Today I noticed that my backrest of 50l top box fell off during ride and is missing. I'm pretty sure no one stole it. I park in a garage or under a tarp, there are 2 independent tilt security sensors on the motorcycle. Does anyone have a similar experience. They told me at the service that they have not experienced this before. They did not accept it as a complaint, they only give a discount. Otherwise, the experience with the motorcycle is positive. What was solved so far (2200 km) was a loose oil screw (1st inspection) and a very small amount of condensed water under the display during the first ride this year.

I had the back rest come off last year I realised that I was hitting it with my boot when getting on the bike
And the fixing was not strong enough just double sided tape on a lug
Lucky I didn't loose it and refixed with some strong mastic and has been ok since

I also occasionally tripped over it when boarding. But I believed in a more solid construction. Maybe I was just unlucky that the last blow came on a bumpy ride. Now I will ask for a double dose of glue and will be more careful.

Araldite, a two part epoxy adhesive, is your best friend for all top box/pannier repairs.

One of my top boxes fell off the shelf while in storage off the mo'cycle resulting in a two piece lid! Half the contents of a 2 x 15 ml blister pack of Araldite later and its stronger than new.

Hi, I don't understand how the backrest can fall off. My backrest is secured with two screws through into the top case lid as well as double stick tape which I think just keeps it looking neat. My back rest came with the top case, is very firm rubber and installed by me. The double stick tape appears to be quite secure and the screws are tight and with a dab of locktite. Its not coming off. (I think)  :169:

Mine was installed directly in the Honda. What they told me, the screws don't hold anything together, it's all mainly on the adhesive tapes. It is said that this has not happened to them yet, and Africans have been counting on that since 2016.

    Hi enzox,
Sorry to hear about your backrest.
    I haven't got a Honda topbox so I don't know what I'm talking about!
Found backrest installation instructions on the web that show how important the screws are.

    https://www.nt1100shop.com/en/genuine-accessories/13-26-honda-50l-top-box-backrest-08r74-mlf-e00z.html#/6-backsrest_seam_color-black

Follow this link. Go to 'attachments'.

They are in French, but the diagrams show what the screws do.

In case you have trouble with links and downloads, I've done these screenshots.

    Tell them...

You had the top box and back rest fitted by Honda and relied on their professional expertise, they chose to ignore the manufacturers instructions and do it their way which is falling short of any reasonable expectation. The back rest was clearly fitted incorrectly therefore they have been negligent, they replace it at their cost and fit it correctly, using the supplied screws and in accordance with the manufacturers instructions.
